Alternative London Sports… #5

No. 5. High Jump

A grasshopper can jump 20 times its own height… although this one in Cornhill has remained stationery for quite some time.

Our First Gold Medal

Adam writes…

Who are the most important people at the Olympic Games?

I didn’t realize it until last Friday, but it’s the Olympians’ mothers.

As we Tweeted last week, Christian Schurr Voight’s mother joined us on the Rock’n’Roll London walk last Friday.

Christian competed for Mexico in the 200m Breaststroke this morning, Tuesday 31st July.

We cheered for Christian online at www.bbc.co.uk

His mom gave us our first gold medal… for hospitality.

“The British people,” she said, “are so welcoming, we have had such kindness and friendliness.

“It is a privilege to be an Olympian, to take part,” she said, in echo of the great Coubertin, founder of the modern Games.

She showed me the stamp on her wrist, the mark of a visitor to the Olympic Village. And she was nearly bursting with pride.

I’ve met Olympians before – the great Alan Wells and David Wilkie, both gold-winning childhood heroes of mine – but I’ve never met an Olympian’s mum before.

Meeting an Olympian’s mum was the greater treat.

Well done Mrs Schurr Voight! I’ve seldom seen anyone so proud.

Olympic Mums 2

Yesterday I watched Team GB swimmer Rebecca Addlington’s mum on the BBC. The interviewer suggested that Becky’s bronze medal in the 400m Freestyle was somehow a disappointment.

Shame on the interviewer!

“She’s over the moon!” replied the proud parent, adding, “I’m over the moon!”

We’re over the moon, too, Mrs A! Go Rebecca! Go Rebecca’s mum!

Olympic Mums 3

Good luck to HRH the Princess Royal as she watches her daughter Zara Phillips compete at Greenwich today!

Tuesday 31st Equestrian

When the Games were staged in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time – in Melbourne 1956 – the equestrian events fell foul of Australia’s strict quarantine rules. The equestrian events were held instead in Stockholm, Sweden.

Running Rings Round The Man From The Middle Of Nowhere

Our modern Prime Ministers, by and large, are not known for their dazzling wit.

Historically speaking they’ve not been known for hysterically speaking.

We couldn’t help but raise a titter, however, at a remark made by David Cameron at the weekend.

Now THERE’S a line I never thought I’d write.

In response to our mate Mitt and his sneering at our Games, Cameron referred to The Mittster’s role in organizing a previous Olympic Games somewhere in North America.

"We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world," he said."

“Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic games in the middle of nowhere.”

Meeow.

A Word Used to Describe an Action, State, or Occurrence, and Forming the Main Part of the Predicate of a Sentence, Such as Hear, Become, Happen

The Games so far… colour, great atmosphere all over London, drama, tears… and new verbs!

“There are high hopes that she could podium in this event.”

“It’s a tough event to medal in, but I’ll give it my best.”

The Truth Is Out There…

We think our iPhone snap of the NBC blimp over London looks pleasingly like a grainy shot of a UFO from some conspiracy theorist's website…

…hang on… maybe it is a UFO?

Great Shots…

No, not Team GB’s archers, sadly. These great shots come from Ian Visits, consistently one of the best London blogs around.

Ian was up bright and early on Saturday to have a nose around the Olympic Park. And you can view his pics at his website www.ianvisits.co.uk

To keep up with Ian’s ongoing London commentary, follow him on Twitter – @ianvisits.

Day Three

The Rings Cycle – Your Historic Sporting Fact of the Day from The Daily Constitutional in London

Monday 30th Shooting

The Paris Olympics of 1900 ran alongside The World’s Fair and the French capital saw a great number of sporting events – both Olympic and otherwise – as part of the celebrations. In total 23 separate shooting events took place – including canon shooting and live pigeon shooting (!) – although the modern IOC recognises only nine as official Olympic events.

Alternative London Sports… #3

A Daily London Photoblog of Alternative London Sports

No. 3. Cycling

Sports news… in East London today, Sir Chris Hoy failed to win gold for team GB in the cycling because the docking station was full and he had to go looking elsewhere.

Always Cross At The Green Man

Day One and the atmosphere around Westminster on Saturday was truly infectious – Beach Volleyball at Horseguards Parade and Cycling on The Mall. Happy crowds, bright sunshine and a genuine feeling of being part of a great big party.

The Dutch helped. They always do…

Excuse Me, Is Anybody Sitting There?

The empty seats are disappointing. Mr Hunt the Culture & Sport bod from the government was on the BBC saying he thinks they were reserved for "corporate sponsors" who just didn’t bother to show up.

Mr Hunt tried his best to do some finger wagging on the BBC but here at OG we fear that he will be powerless to "repatriate" the unused tix with Londoners who would LOVE to use them.

In defence of the absentee suits… I suppose if you spend your life with your snout in the trough, it's tough to get your greedy bum down on a chair at the same time.

That’s Rich

Andrew Marr on the opening ceremony coverage on the BBC on Friday.

“London,” he drawled, “is an ugly city.”

Frankly, I resent that from a guy with such a great face for radio. Cheeky blighter.

Oh… Bugger

Here’s our attempt to capture the Red Arrows as they roared over our house on Friday for the Opening Ceremony…

… in my defence, they were going really REALLY fast!

Is This Mitt Romney's Favourite Cinema?

Not everyone thinks our Olympics are a good thing. Do they, Mr Mitt? This characteristically irreverent marquee message from the folks at the Prince Charles cinema, Leicester Place caught our eye.

Happy Olympics, Mitt, mate!

All That Glisters

The gold track suits for Team GB at the opening ceremony... dearie me. The Greeks started this whole Olympic shebang. And as usual, they have a word for everything. The word Hubris means pride before a fall... Gold track suits… no gold medals on Day 1… Hmmmmmmm.

***

Brand Police

Sweet to see the athletes at the opening ceremony filming events on their phones for posterity. Wonder what the people at a certain South Korean mobile phone manufacturers – big sponsors of the Games – thought of the sight of so many Apple iPhones in the parade?

Sunday 29th Fencing

Fencing has featured at every modern Games since 1896. In 1924 women competed for the first time with Great Britain’s Gladys Davies taking silver medal in the Women’s Foil.
